What’s most important to know about us? You don’t have to be British, and you don’t need British ancestry to be a resident at The British Home. It might help though if you enjoy an occasional afternoon tea! And you loved the “Downton Abbey” television series. The mission of The British Home is: “To provide an excellent retirement home in beautiful, comfortable surroundings with exceptional levels of loving care and compassion.” Our vision is: To remain a boutique enterprise with concierge service thereby continuing this excellence in residential care through critical evaluation and continuous improvement. “A little hidden gem on a hill with many huge hearts” aptly describes The British Home nestled in the attractive foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in Sierra Madre. Purchasing the property in 1930, the Daughters of the British Empire (DBE) in the USA, a non-profit American women’s society founded in 1909 opened the historic landmark in 1931. Today, The British Home reflects a typical retirement home populated by a diverse group of citizens and residents of all nationalities and walks of life, creating a harmonious and loving family home. The British Home is an independent American owned 501(c)3 corporation. Licensed to accommodate 41 residents and described as “typical,” the home maintains its historic uniqueness providing gracious, independent and assisted living in this secure and peaceful residential neighborhood. We are proud of our history and in today’s hectic life style, are secure in our approach of blending “old world” charm and tradition with modernity. Honoring our goals and mission, and with support from the DBE we do subsidize a certain percentage of residents who are in need. Our monthly fees are reasonable including many services and activities and our residents thrive, enjoying the care and attention given them. The average age of our resident family is 87 with the age ranging from 66 to 108. On average, The British Home maintains 30 residents year around. Engaging many well-known visitors over her lifetime, from the Consuls General of Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and honored royal visits from HRH, Princess Margaret and Princess Alexandra, The Home’s highlight of all visits occurred in 1983 when graced by the presence of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
